What usually goes wrong
A floor to ceiling tower only works if the top is genuinely pressed into the ceiling. Twisting a pole by hand gives you no feel for how tight it is, and a column that is nearly right rocks the first time a cat lands on it.

The barrel at the foot sets one of three positions and the crank handle winds the last of it home. Getting a tension column properly tight is the whole job, and a crank is a good deal easier to judge than twisting a pole by hand while holding the top steady.
