The craft gear lives in a box across the hall, so the end of every session is a trip with both arms full. Half of it never makes the journey and the floor keeps the rest. Buying a second piece of storage usually means losing the floor space you bought the table to free up.
The storage is the third seat
The bench is a seat and a toy box in the same footprint. The lid lifts on a hinge, the compartment runs the full 23 inch length, and three or four children can still sit down.
MDF panels on pine legs, finished white with natural wood tops. The manufacturer lists ASTM and CPSIA certification, rates the table and the bench to 110 lb each and the chairs to 60 lb, and gives the set to children aged 3 to 5. Everything stows under the table when the room needs to be clear: both chairs and the bench tuck in.
Four pieces, one footprint
A table, two chairs and a bench. The bench has a slatted back and a hinged seat, so it works as a third place at the table and as the place everything goes afterwards. Push all three seats under the table and the set takes up barely more floor than the table alone.
A toy box with a back on it
Lift the seat and the whole bench is one deep compartment. Soft toys, blocks, dressing up clothes and the box of crayons all go in. The manufacturer fits a hinge so the lid comes down slowly rather than dropping on fingers, and grooves the edge so a child can get a grip on it.
Everything at the same seat height
The table top is 20 inches off the floor, and the chair seats and the bench seat all sit at 10 inches. That matters: a bench at a different height from the chairs means one child is always the odd one out. The table measures 27.5 by 19 inches and the bench 23 inches long.
Three or four at once
Two chairs on one side, the bench on the other. The manufacturer says it takes three to four children, which is a birthday craft table rather than a desk for one. The painted surface is waterproof and smooth, so glue and poster paint come off with a cloth.
