Why a short bookcase is often the right one
Tall shelving wastes the top half
A six foot bookcase puts the top two shelves out of easy reach, and in a small room it blocks light and makes the walls feel closer. Under a window it will not fit at all.
Stop at 31.5 inches and use the top
This one tops out at hip height, so it slides under a window ledge and the top surface earns its keep. Every bay is still within reach from standing, and two of the shelves move to fit what you store.
At 31.5 inches this stops at about hip height, which is the useful bit. The top becomes a surface for a lamp or a plant instead of dead space near the ceiling. Two of the three shelves move, so a row of records and a row of paperbacks can share the same cabinet. The sides and back are closed, so nothing slides out sideways.
Low enough to live on
Set it beside a desk and the top holds a tray, a lamp or a stack of post. Below, three open bays take books, files and a storage box.
Shelves that move
Two of the shelves lift out and reset at a different height. Tall binders on one level, paperbacks on another. The peg holes run up the inside of both side panels.
Pair them up
Two units side by side give you a six bay bank of storage at the same height, or stand one at each end of a sofa. The walnut grain is the same on both so they read as one piece.
