A set of four bar stools is bought for the times the house is full and stored for the rest of the year. Four fixed stools with backs take up roughly a square metre of floor whichever corner you push them into, which is why spare seating so often ends up in a garage.
Backs off, stools stacked
The backrests are held by two screws each and lift off, turning the chairs into backless stools that nest inside one another. Protective pads between them stop the stack scratching itself, and a cut out handle in each seat means you carry them one handed.

Assembled, these read as classic industrial chairs: a curved tube back, a pressed seat and four splayed legs. At 46 in overall they are as tall as a dining chair pulled up to a bar.

The drawing pairs the 30 in seat with tables of 40 in to 43 in, which gives 10 in to 13 in of knee room. Under a 36 in kitchen counter it would be far too tall, so this is a bar stool rather than a counter stool.
