On a dark winter afternoon the corner of the room where the play kitchen lives is the dimmest part of the house, and the game drifts elsewhere.
It lights its own counter
A strip of LEDs runs along the front edge of the worktop, worked from a remote. The counter stays bright and interesting when the rest of the room has gone grey.
Stainless steel and plastic parts sit in an MDF body, finished in white with pink trim and a pink striped splashback. A tall fridge and freezer stand at one end with a water and ice dispenser. The counter holds a sink, two burners and a control panel, with a washing machine and an oven below.
Place, press, enjoy
The ice maker takes cubes in the top of the door. Press the lever with the cup underneath and they drop through. It is a small sequence with a clear result, which is what keeps a three year old repeating it.
The cooking corner
Two burners take a pot each. The knobs click as they turn. The tap runs over the sink for rinsing the toy vegetables before anything goes in the pan.
The small stuff
Long handles that a small hand can hook a finger round, rounded corners on the counter edges and a telephone handset on the end panel. The manufacturer also describes the boards as TSCA certified and the materials as BPA free.
