A back that stands close to vertical tips your weight forward, so you end up perched near the front of the seat without noticing. Half an hour later your lower back is doing the work the sofa should be doing.

The record states the backrest leans at 105 degrees and describes it as supporting the natural curve of the spine. Paired with a 20.5 inch seat, it puts you back against the cushion with your feet still flat on the floor.

Clear underneath, in use

Photographed in a real room with a robot vacuum halfway under the frame. The legs splay outward at the corners, which leaves the whole area beneath the seat open rather than boxed in, and lets the floor read continuously through the room.

The numbers behind it

Forty-seven inches across the back, 44 inches of seat, 29 deep and 36 high. The seat runs 20.5 inches front to back on a 5.5 inch cushion, sitting 19 inches from the floor, with a 20 inch back panel and arms 24.5 inches up. The panel prints 463 lb.

Three details, close up

The maker's own detail strip: the bolster armrest resting on the wooden arm, the backrest marked at 105 degrees, and a hand pressing into the seat cushion. The angle is the one worth noting, because it is the difference between sitting back and perching.

Marked on the maker's own detail panel and described as following the curve of the spine.

Printed on the dimension panel. A static rating for weight resting evenly on the seat.

Enough for a robot vacuum to pass under, which the maker photographs rather than only claiming.

A dense looped pile, warm to sit on and softer underhand than a flat woven fabric.

Splayed solid wood with foot pads on each, to keep the floor free of scratches.

High density sponge, with the bolster arms padded to match.

A 105 degree back means you are supported leaning back rather than perched on the front edge.

Thirteen and a half inches of clearance, so the machine cleans under the sofa instead of bumping off it.

What we stand behind

• Every measurement, the 13.5 inch clearance and the 463 lb capacity come from the manufacturer's own panels.
• The 105 degree backrest angle is marked on the maker's own detail photograph.
• No fibre content, foam density, carton size, assembly time or net weight is published, so none is quoted.
• Ships from our United States warehouse, free shipping over $150, and 14 day returns unused in the original packaging.
• 14 day returns, unused and in the original packaging.

Is this the same as the cream version?

Same frame, same measurements and the same 463 lb rating. Only the colour of the sherpa differs, so the choice is about the room rather than the construction.

How do I stop sherpa matting?

Vacuum with an upholstery head and brush the pile back afterwards with something soft. Most flattening on a looped pile is crushing rather than lost fibre, and it recovers. Keep claws away from it, because loops snag more easily than a flat weave.

Is 20.5 inches of seat depth shallow?

Slightly. The usual band is 21 to 24 inches. At 20.5 inches this suits sitting upright with feet on the floor, which fits the 105 degree back angle. It is not a sofa for curling up sideways.

Does it need assembling?

No assembly time or tool list is published for this loveseat, so none is quoted. An exposed leg design normally needs the legs fitting, which is a short job for one person with the sofa on its back.
